Ian Hamilton writes: The Forty Plus St. Albans Section held a Founders’ Day event on Thursday 4th April comprising a speed judging competition in the morning and a freewheeling competition after lunch.
The day dawned dry but very cold - the temperature barely got above +1 degree C all day, which kept the numbers down, but 12 riders braved the conditions.
The speed judging competition involved riding a course of about 3 miles in a clockwise and an anti-clockwise direction - the objective being to ride each circuit in the same time.  Apart from one person who went off-route, all riders achieved circuit times within a difference of 39 seconds which is, in my experience, truly remarkable on a course which included some hills.  Four riders managed time differences of under 10 seconds but the clear winner was Roger Pask with identical times for each circuit.
After adjourning to a local hostelry for some lunch and to warm up, the afternoon event was a free-wheeling competition, which as its name suggests is to descend a 'gentle' hill without pedalling - the winner being the rider who gets further along the road.  This event was won by Kevan Harrop.

Hopefully in future years, whatever format for Founders Day is used, it will at least be somewhat warmer.

5 Apr 2013: Founders' Day ride, Surrey & Sussex.

The toast to the founders of the club
Derek Hanson writes: Despite cold, blustery weather, 33 members and friends took part in the Surrey and Sussex Founders’ Day celebration.  The event was based on a 62 km ride, marking the 62 years since the Club’s formation.  This followed a figure of eight route spanning the Surrey/Sussex county boundary and partly ridden as a group, and part solo.  Lunch was at the Six Bells at Newdigate (the crossover of the figure eight).  New tenants at the Six Bells were both welcoming and hospitable.  We did not go hungry!

Highlight of the lunch meeting was a speech by Honorary Life Member Stan Brown, who spoke warmly of the cycling connections of founder Cecil Cooke, and the history of the Club. He proposed a toast to the Club and to the 20 founder members.  After lunch, riders completed the final segment of the route, most incorporating this in their homeward ride.   All in all, a successful day!
