SA40+ Founders Day Ride

The start and finish of an annual event arranged by the St Albans 40+ was at Marston Moretaine this year. The morning ride was 23 miles approx, followed by lunch in the Forest Centre. In the afternoon the ride was 16 miles approximately followed by a nice cuppa.Andy Ewens gave the following summary of the NH 40+ ride (and photo):

Just two of us on the Tuesday ride today, while others went to the Founders Day. Ronnie – the ride leader and me, Andy E, the follower and temporary scribe. We waited at the Letchworth Fountain until 10:35 and concluded it was just going to be the two of us so Ronnie led off on the “Pedal for Pounds” Garden City Hospice charity ride route. This took us on a familiar route out of Letchworth to Willian and Gravely from where we headed east through Ardeley, Moor Green, Wood End and onto Great Munden.

Still seems new to me but I am getting more familiar with these parts of the Hertfordshire countryside, Ronnie was keeping a steady pace so my concentration was on staying alongside whenever road conditions allowed and taking my rightful place on his wheel when necessary. We then headed south to Dane End on to Whempstead, taking in Watton at Stone, Datchworth, Woolmer Green before getting to the lunch stop.

Just before Ronnie asked me how far I had ridden so far, having started out from Wrestlingworth as usual it was 40+ miles by this point, so he was absolutely right when he said “I expect you’ll be getting hungry and looking forward to the stop”.

Lunch at Spokes was very welcome, we were the only 2 there, toasties and coffee were excellent, and interesting composting toilet!! We discussed the rest of the ride over lunch and Ronnie kindly agreed make a detour to the north to get me back towards home. So we went through Codicote, and on to Whitwell, now familiar territory for me before heading to Hitchin and Arlesey, even more familiar, up to Langford and over the A1 at the water tower. Here we parted company, I congratulated Ronnie on being an excellent ride leader, while I took the straightforward route to Dunton, Eyeworth and Wrestlingworth, Ronnie took the more demanding route to Hinxworth and over the Ashwell hills into the wind back Letchworth, I’ve seen his ride on Starva so I know he made it home.

Total distance for me today was 68miles a new peak. Thanks Ronnie
